Nails are not always the right answer — and in rented spaces, they're often not an option at all. These five methods cover everything from lightweight unframed prints to heavier framed pieces, with honest notes on what each one is actually suitable for.

1. ADHESIVE PICTURE HANGING STRIPS

The most reliable damage-free option for framed prints. Interlocking strip pairs — one half on the frame, one half on the wall — hold significantly more than most people expect. 3M Command Large strips hold up to 7 kg per pair. Pairs can be stacked for heavier pieces.

  • Best for: Framed prints up to A1. Smooth painted walls.
  • Weight limit: Up to 7 kg per pair (Large). Check packaging for your specific strips.
  • Avoid on: Textured walls, fresh paint (wait 7 days minimum), wallpaper, brick.
  • Removal: Pull the tab straight down along the wall, slowly. Never pull at an angle — this is what damages plaster.

2. POSTER PUTTY (BLU-TACK OR EQUIVALENT)

Reusable, repositionable, and genuinely residue-free when removed correctly. The go-to for unframed prints and lightweight pieces.

  • Best for: Unframed posters, lightweight prints, temporary arrangements.
  • Weight limit: Suitable for prints up to approximately A2 unframed.
  • Avoid on: Uncoated or matte-finish prints — prolonged contact can cause oil transfer on sensitive paper. Not suitable for anything framed or heavy.

Tip: Roll the putty between your fingers before applying to activate the adhesive. Use a small amount at each corner plus the centre of each long edge.

3. ADHESIVE HOOKS

For prints with a wire or sawtooth hanger, adhesive hooks provide a more conventional hanging point without a nail. Available in multiple weight ratings.

  • Best for: Framed prints with an existing hanger. Single statement pieces.
  • Weight limit: 1–4.5 kg depending on hook size. Check the packaging.

Note: One hook per frame rather than matched pairs — this makes repositioning easier than strips.

4. WASHI TAPE

Underrated for minimalist interiors. Low-tack, comes in neutral and white tones, and leaves virtually no residue on most surfaces. Particularly suited to unframed prints where the tape itself becomes part of the display aesthetic — flush to the wall, raw-edge.

  • Best for: Unframed art prints in A4–A2 sizes displayed flat to the wall.
  • Weight limit: Very light — unframed paper only.
  • Not suitable for: Anything framed, heavy, or large.

5. POSTER RAILS AND CLIP HANGERS

Wooden or metal rails that clamp the top of an unframed print and hang from a single hook or narrow nail. One of the cleanest display methods available — the print itself sits flat to the wall with no visible adhesive, and the rail becomes a considered design element.

Particularly well suited to minimalist and Scandinavian-style interiors where the hanging method should look intentional rather than functional.

  • Best for: Unframed fine art prints where you want a gallery-style, zero-adhesive display. Prints you want to change seasonally.

Note: Works best with papers that lie flat. Heavyweight archival paper (such as that used in North Minimal prints) holds particularly well with this method.

GENERAL RULES FOR ALL METHODS

Clean the wall surface with rubbing alcohol before applying any adhesive. Dust and grease reduce holding strength significantly.

Wait at least one hour after applying adhesive strips before hanging. Wait 24–72 hours before applying the full load — adhesives need time to cure.

Always respect weight limits. The majority of adhesive failures happen when limits are ignored.

For textured, porous, or wallpapered surfaces: nails are the better choice. No adhesive method holds reliably on rough texture.
